Verdict
Hold-out did not confirm
Strong in the development window, but the 12-month sealed hold-out lost money and trailed the index; the forward paper run is now the deciding evidence.
- Development window 2016-01 to 2025-09: 16.0% a year vs 13.3% for the Nifty 500 price index; maximum drawdown -18.6% vs -38.3%.
- Sealed hold-out 2025-10-01 to 2026-10-16 (opened once, 2026-10-18): -5.2% vs -2.9% for the index; maximum drawdown -9.7% vs -14.8%; 67 trades, win rate 30%, 52 stop-outs; gross P&L was negative (-₹1.09 lakh) before ₹0.33 lakh of slippage and charges.
- Reading: a trendless, choppy year hurts a momentum-with-stops design, as in 2018-2019. The hold-out is only 12 months, so it is neither proof of failure nor a pass, but it removes the support the back-test alone could give.
- Random stock selection with identical stops and regime rules averaged 11.3% in the development window; the real ranking beat all 30 runs (about +5 points a year).
- Slippage stress (full re-run): 14.1% at 0.5% per side, 14.0% at 1%, 5.6% at 2% (index 13.3%): the edge survives about 1% per side but not 2%.
- 2016-2020 alone: 9.5% vs 11.3% for the index. 2021-2025: 23.1% vs 15.3%. Top 10 trades produced 63% of profit.
- Capital-gains tax, dividends and the reference design's daily loss limit are not modelled.

2025-10 to 2026-10: -5.2% vs index -2.9%, win rate 30%, gross P&L negative. Only 12 months, so weak evidence either way.

Explain the strategy
Imagine that every month you look at the 500 biggest listed Indian companies and ask: which ones have been climbing the most steadily over the last six months? Meridian buys up to 15 of those 'steady climbers', puts at most 4 out of every 100 rupees into any one of them, and keeps part of the money in cash. If the overall market looks weak it holds more cash; if the market looks strong it invests more. If a share falls too far from its recent high, it is sold automatically, so one bad share cannot do much damage. It will often be wrong on individual shares (about 6 in 10 trades lose a little), but the winners can run a long way, and that is where the profit comes from.

Known limitations
- Past members that left the index and have no price history are missing, which flatters 2016–2020 especially.
- Split and bonus adjustment uses a price-ratio check, not a corporate-action table.
- Benchmark is a price index (no dividends); the strategy is price-only too.
- Tax on short-term gains (median hold 45 days) is not deducted.
- Estimated repo-rate cash yield and cost schedule; verify against contract notes.
